The Wonky Log Cabin Quilt
I wrote two new patterns for Halloween; this first miniature quilt is called Halloween Trails. It is foundation paper pieced (FPP), finishes at 10 inches and is inspired by the Snail Trails pattern adapted to wonky log-cabins. The teenie-meenie blocks finish at 2.5” and are framed by that so-impressive scalloped border!
The adorable little quilt is made almost entirely with 1” strips, except for the scalloped border. Well, you would need to be familiar with FPP and a confident beginner but it comes up really fast. It does look very striking, doesn’t it?
If you want to do something different, that is not in Halloween colours, I do have an option for you! It is Irises, the original inspiration for this quilt, that came a long, long time ago, more than ten years back! It is the same pattern, just one step easier. This does not have the four-patch in the centre, unlike the Halloween Trails quilt. So I also wrote that pattern too, finally! Each of the blocks is a single FPP template and if one is familiar with FPP, it is a breeze to piece. If you don’t feel confident about attempting the scalloped border, it is easy enough to add a narrow sashing and choose to finish with a simple border! All those options are given with the pattern.
By the way, I plan to write the patterns for many more permutations and combinations for Wonky Log Cabin quilt blocks, they seem so versatile! Perhaps different sizes? Bigger blocks?

Do these two beauties make you want to finish your next mini with that special look of scallops, but you dont know how to go about it? I had written a tutorial for how to make the scalloped border flong, long ago and even published it here on my blog! But even I had a problem looking for it when I wanted to design the Halloween Trails mini. So when I found it, I decided to put it down in a downloadable file and easily accessible. I uploaded it on the store, and there it is, available for a free download!
The Halloween Bats Pattern
The second pattern is for beginners, but you do need to know foundation paper piecing. I call it (what else?) Halloween Bats! The two ‘bat’ blocks can be foundation paper-pieced in a couple of hours. So it works great as a last minute project. The quilt finishes at 15” square and is easily adaptable into a cushion. Applique a moon to brighten up the dark night. Just dig into your stash for fat-eighths in two purples, orange and black, besides the binding and you have your fabric. The simple quilt comes up fast, with just two FPP blocks, alternated with two plain squares.

I drafted several variations of these. I did not have the time to actually make the quilts, so I decided to ask Google Gemini to make me mock ups from these pattern variations and here they are!

I think Google Gemini does pretty good quilting! I do like that haunted house! And in the next one the small quilt is converted to a cushion.

While I was at it, I asked Gemini to mock-up the Halloween Trails quilt too. Note the yellows in the centre that it came up with!

Do share pics on my facebook page if you decide to make any of these!
Happy Quilting!
